Natural Hair (Story, Styles and Tips)

'Everyone is going natural' and majority of us get it wrong the first time because we never really know what we are getting ourselves into especially when the last time our hair was natural was when our mom took care of everything.

In summary, my natural hair journey started at first in 2013 when i realized i had the same hair length since high school up until my 3rd year in college. So i got a really short hair cut and rocked the cut until it grew out of the style. After about 3 months i got impatient and put texturizer in my hair (Biggest mistake). My hair ended up partially permed and to make matters worse, i added heat to it thereby damaging it further. Which lead me to cut my hair a second time in January of 2014.

Now second time was a charm as i have stayed clear of texturizers and heat entirely. Its been two years and i like to think i'm very comfortable with my natural hair now. I am still working on ways to retain my length considering i am very lazy with my hair care. I've been consistent with hair products but i get a lot of hair breakage from braiding, weather changes etc so my hair hasn't grown much as a result.

Tips i think might help someone else struggling to grow that awkward length.

  1. Stay away from heat. If you really want/need to straighten your hair go to a professional natural hair stylist and only do so once or twice a year.
  2. Love your scalp, give it a good massage, oil it, restrain from braiding your hair too tight.
  3. Invest in a silk/satin pillow or head cap. I prefer the satin pillow because i tend to forget to wear my cap or lose them.
  4. Always try to put your hair in a twist or cornrow before sleeping, you'll wake up with soft ready to-go hair.
  5. Wet and condition your hair before combing to reduce breakage
  6. Follow some natural hair pages/blogs for daily inspiration and motivation ( my favorite is naturalhairdoescare )
  7. Do extensive research before investing in products. Remember you can't go wrong with water based hair products.
  8. Most importantly learn to be comfortable in your natural hair, wear it out 1/2 weeks in  between braids/weaves. i.e Wigs are a great idea, Crochet is bae.

Some easy and protective hair styles i have played with.

THE BIGGEST IRONY, LIFE

Isn't it ironic how we run away from everything that hurts us but always end up in pain?
How we are afraid to open our heart to avoid heartbreaks when in fact the heart is made to be broken..
Everything in life is made to be broken.
Ironic isn't it,
We stand and fall and stand back again only to fall eventually.
We live and we die... eventually
The irony of life itself is not meant to be understood by mere mortals like ourselves.
Like Chess pieces being played by a force mightier than we can ever understand or make sense of.
You are called a King, you think you are important
But just like the king piece of a chess game,
You only serve as a object
Nothing more
Do not try to understand love,
Do not try to understand life,
Do not understand what is not meant to be understood
Simply accept every situation you find yourself and make the best out of it because that is all you can do.
